Home Remedies For Dog Incontinence and Causes

When a dog, or any pet for that matter, starts to have accidents in the house it is not something that can simply be swept under the rug. Some type of action has to be taken, whether it is a trip to the vet, designing a home remedy plan, or implementing a natural supplement that is capable of curing a wide range of dogs incontinence causes.

The list of potential culprits of dogs incontinence causes is quite long. This list would include stress, nervousness, displacement syndrome, advancing age, ectopic ureter, partial blockage of the urethra, bladder infection, distended bladder, diseases such as diabetes or Cushing's, and brain or spinal cord disorders. Believe it or not this is the short list. As you can see this list contains both treatable and untreatable causes. Some of the treatable ones will require a surgical procedure or at the very least a veterinary visit.

On the other hand there are a number of these which can be treated at home, such as mild urinary tract infections, nervousness, and bladder or urethral control problems. Most home remedies approach healing in what is known as a full spectrum approach. This means removing any bolder in the middle of your dogs highway to natural healing, allow your pet to drive down the middle of the road to good health. But before you turn over the car keys let's look at a few simple steps you can take to eliminate your dogs incontinence (or at least reduce its severity) once and for all.

There are a number of basic rules as they apply to home remedies for dogs incontinence causes. Let's look at these:

*Beware of dehydration: If your dog is urinating all over everything in sight the natural tendency is to take their water away. You should fight this urge, and in fact go the other way by making sure they have plenty of clean fresh water to drink.

*Bathroom breaks: Providing timely bathroom breaks is a key component to home urinary tract and incontinence healing. When your dog has to hold urine they put unnecessary pressure on the bladder and open the door for bacterial infection due to the pooling of urine in the bladder. They may leak urine due to a weak sphincter but still may have pooling bacteria laden urine.

If you will be away from home it is important to find a neighbor or friend that is willing to come over and allow your dog to void until the condition has abated.

*Add blueberry or cranberry juice to their water: This is one I have used successfully over the years with my pets and you should too. These juices make it difficult for bacteria to attach to the interior lining of the urinary tract, thus sending dangerous bacteria out of the system rather than allowing them to gain a foothold inside the urinary tract.

*Keep your pet active: Inactivity can create a long list of potential additional problems for the incontinent pet. Studies show that active pets have better urinary system function. They also have better immune system function. A healthier immune system helps them to fight off disease more effectively. A couple of cautionary notes. Be wary of the heat, sick pets dehydrate easily. The second suggestion is not to overdo it. Allow them to go out for just a few minutes and then bring them in for some of that tasty cranberry water.

* Homeopathic natural supplements: Homeopathic supplements address a wide range of dogs incontinence causes and should be a part of any comprehensive home treatment plan. They tend to particular effective when bladder issues are the root cause of the incontinence.

One final word of caution. If you are doing all the right things, and your pets condition does not improve in a week or so, you should contact your vet to formulate a more aggressive approach to treatment.

Urinary Incontinence in Pregnancy

Incontinence in pregnancy can be a problem for many women. In fact, the majority of women will experience this at some point during their pregnancy although the scope of inconvenience can vary from mild to frequent occurrences. For the majority of women, incontinence related to pregnancy often fades in a few weeks or months, once they have given birth. But unfortunately some continue to experience ongoing problems.

Pregnant women are most likely to suffer from stress incontinence. This type happens when there is too much pressure on the bladder and it sufferers find that they have to urinate very frequently or might be unable to hold their urine Nevertheless, women should not feel hopeless since incontinence in pregnancy can be prevented and treated.

One solution is to use bladder training - also called Kegel exercises. This is one of the most popular options for treating a bladder adversity. This can be implemented whether during or after the time of pregnancy and it can be done right inside your home. Voiding is another practice which requires you to record the frequency of your visits to the bathroom for urination. You need a chart to apply voiding so that you will be able to observe your leaking pattern. By identifying the pattern, you will be able to steer away from unnecessary leaking in the future.

Incontinence in pregnancy should be seen as a natural part of the process. Women can take action in advance by educating themselves about pelvic floor exercises and what to expect.

How to Sew Adult Diapers

The first step of sewing an adult diaper is going to be to decide what type of protection the wearer needs. Assuming it is you who needs the protection, ask yourself the following questions: Do you need a diaper that you simply throw in the wash and has the 'soaker' built in? Do you need something that you can adjust the soaking capability? Do you need a diaper that is 'waterproof' or do you need a diaper that is for very light protection?

Lets talk about your options below.

1. If you want something that you never have to mess with, sew an All In One (AIO) style. This style of diaper has the soaker sewn into it so you'll never have to worry about stuffing it when it comes out of the wash. This is the most like disposables.

2. If you want something that you can adjust the soaking capability of the diaper, choose to sew a 'pocket' style. This is a diaper that has an opening for putting in as much or as little soaker as your individual needs are. This is the most commonly sought after style of cloth adult diapers and is what we recommend.

3. If you want a protection that doesn't need to be 'waterproof', choose to sew an All In Two (AI2) style. This style simply does not have a waterproof barrier. Many times incontinence issues are so minor that the wearer doesn't need any more bulk then necessary, so they choose to go with an AI2. Another reason to choose an AI2 is if you already have a leak proof barrier cover.

The second step is going to be to find an adult diaper pattern. I prefer to do all of my pattern shopping online. Online sewing patterns are excellent ways to get exactly what you want at a fraction of the cost of paper patterns. Online sewing patterns are also a great choice because most come with detailed tutorials that allow the user to see/understand exactly what to do at the coordinating step.

A good sewing pattern is going to have the following things:

1. An adult diaper pattern should have a detailed "Supply List". The supply list is very important because it tells the 'sewer/maker' what fabrics and supplies they will need to make the cloth diaper.

2. An adult diaper pattern should have "helpful hints". When you are making anything for the first time, or even the 100th time, it is nice to have good instructions from people who make them more then you. Budget friendly hints can help you design your own diaper from cheaper fabrics and supplies. Hints on how to choose various fabrics depending on individual needs are worth every bit of reading. Hints on how to sew certain types of fabric should also be included in the pattern.

3. An adult diaper pattern should have a size chart. This allows the 'sewer/maker' to correctly choose the proper size for the wearer.

4. An adult diaper pattern should have printable pattern pieces. Do not purchase or try to follow a pattern that has you draft your own pattern. This takes time that you could be sewing a stash of reusable products for yourself.

Lets face it: you are going to purchase the sewing pattern online... so why not have pieces that you can print from your home printer? Not only that, but with printable pattern pieces, you can print over and over so you never have to worry about the 'first cut' being the wrong one.

5. An adult diaper pattern should have a step by step tutorial with images for each step. This is the BEST part about purchasing a sewing pattern online. Pictures should be clear and have descriptions that accurately describe the step.

6. The most important thing: The best adult diaper pattern is going to have OPTIONS. If you read through the first step in this article, you have probably decided which type of diaper you want... but wouldn't it be better if you could have all the options in the same purchase? Choose an adult diaper pattern that has the options of being an AIO, Pocket or AI2!

The third step of how to sew an adult cloth diaper is going to be shopping for fabrics and supplies. Once you purchase the adult diaper pattern, you'll need to buy the stuff to get it done. Most diaper making supply stores online are the best priced and easiest to find. You may be able to find some supplies at a local fabric store, but save the headache and order online.

The fourth step of sewing an adult cloth diaper is going to be making your own stash.

Follow the adult diaper pattern directions and step by step images to sew the cloth diapers. Sew some with fun printed fabric for the days when you are feeling lively. This is your body and you deserve to have some adorable incontinence underpants that make you feel protected and secure about yourself.

There are very limited adult diaper patterns available. The one that gives you all of options listed is made by Mamma Can Do It. Simply download and get your stash started!

How to Select Bladder Control Pads For Optimum Security and Comfort

For millions of men and women of all ages, bladder control pads are an invaluable part of incontinence management.

Incontinence pads can provide both security and comfort for people with bladder control problems. Specially developed absorbent layers designed to be worn inside regular or protective underwear, pads are discreet, unobtrusive, and affordable. For many people they're the perfect "middle ground" solution when regular underwear isn't enough, but special incontinence pants provide more protection than is needed.

For people with light or mild bladder control problems, using special incontinence pads inside of regular underwear is often the only additional protective measure needed to work, play, travel, and generally enjoy life with confidence.

A wide variety of incontinence pads is available. The leading manufacturers of incontinence products offer pads made specifically for men or women, in a range of sizes, shapes, and thicknesses. Here are some tips on selecting the incontinence pads that are right for you.

Don't "make do" with pads that aren't specifically designed for bladder control issues. Most people initially try using women's sanitary pads for incontinence padding. While they may provide some level of protection, they simply cannot offer the security, comfort, and confidence that specially designed incontinence pads can.

Bladder control pads are made of several layers of material specially formulated for maximum absorption, and most also feature a waterproof outer layer to protect underwear and other clothing against wetness. They're also designed to provide maximum protection where wetness is most likely, and shaped to minimize leakage.

Look for gender specific pads. Using pads as a primary form of incontinence management means finding the ones that offer the best balance between protection and comfort. While unisex pads are appropriate for some people in some situations, generally speaking gender specific pads provide the maximum security, discretion, and comfort.

Don't be afraid to experiment. Incontinence pads are relatively inexpensive and readily available both in stores and online, so try different types, brands, and styles until you find the ones that work best for you in various situations and circumstances.

For example, you may find that slightly heavier pads are best for overnight use, while thinner pads that are less bulky serve you best during the day. A more absorbent pad may prove to be best when traveling or participating in physical exercise, while minimal protection may be enough for everyday activities.

Some people also find that layering pads is a workable solution for extended wear. Experiment with layering pads of varying thickness to find the combination that's best for you.

How to Help Keep an Adult Diaper in Place?

Many incontinence sufferers are worried that if they use an adult diaper then they have to adjust it continuously so as to keep it in place. In addition, many others worry that if their adult diaper is not kept in place, they will risk having leakage or an accident. The challenges of managing incontinence can seem overwhelming and this often leaves many people curtailing their normal lives and cutting back on things that they want to do in order to prevent embarrassment in public while managing their incontinence. The good news is that there is no reason to do this. There are many strategies that can help you to wear your adult diaper confidently and be assured that it will stay in place. Here is what you need to know about how to help keep an adult diaper in place-

• Wear the right size - The most important thing that you can do in order to keep your adult diaper in place is to choose the right size. If you are not wearing the right size, it will be much harder to keep it in place. There is usually a great deal of sizing information that can help you to choose the right size. Keep in mind however, that different lines of adult diapers are sized differently, so you may have to try several before finding the right size.

• Wear the right gender - Manufacturers of diapers understand that men and women have different needs when it comes to any incontinence product. This has led to the development of incontinence products for men and incontinence products for women. This is true when it comes to diapers. If you want to keep your diaper in place then it is important to be wearing the one that is made for your gender. This will help the fit and the protection to be better and keep it from slipping and causing an accident.

• Choose the right clothes - Part of keeping an adult diaper in place will have to do with the clothing of the wearer. If you are going to wear a diaper then choose clothes that will aid in keeping the diaper in place and not push it down or up. An important consideration is the size of the clothing that you will be wearing. If you are wearing clothes that are too small or too large then the chances are higher that your diaper will not stay where it needs to be and you risk having leakage or an accident.

• Consider wearing incontinence over pant - If you are worried about your diaper staying in place or that of someone in your care then you may want to consider using incontinence over pant. This is a rubberized pant that goes on over the diaper, similar to the rubber or plastic pants which are often used with washable baby diapers. These incontinence pants are generally a little larger than the diaper and can help to hold it in place; no matter what the physical activity of the wearer is.

• Try different types of adult diapers - It is important for anyone with incontinence to understand that there are different types of diapers. This means that you need to try out several different kinds in order to find the one that you feel stays in place the best. Many online sites offer sample packages of diapers so that you can try out a few before making big cash investment. This will allow you to find the diaper that works best for your incontinence management needs.

Old Dogs Incontinence - Ideas That Can Help

Old dogs incontinence has several causes with a unique solution for each problem.

Common Causes and Solutions

Weakened Urinary Sphincter: As a dog ages, sometimes the urinary sphincter muscles weaken. These muscles help the urethra close to stop the flow of urine. These muscles hold the bladder closed until it is full. Then a command from the brain signals the muscles to relax, opening the bladder and releasing the urine. Normally, dogs can control these muscles. This condition usually occurs in female dogs that have been spayed. Medications are available to help correct the problem.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction: Like the name implies, if your dog is acting disoriented and forgets familiar places and people, then some type of brain function issue may be occurring in a way that is similar to human Alzheimer Disease. There is a prescription medication available that could help, although there could be side effects such as tremors. There are homeopathic natural remedies available for dogs that may also be worth a try that target memory and brain function.

Neurogenic Incontinence: In this type of old dogs incontinence, a problem in the spine is making it difficult to cut off the urine. The nervous system is getting in the way of the urinary system acting normally. Since the bladder doesn't empty, it fills to full and then the pressure from the full bladder forces some urine out of the body, which is why you see dribbling or leakage. This is a difficult condition to treat with focus on helping the bladder. A homeopathic remedy that focuses on the bladder may also help.

Urinary Tract Problem or Blockage: If a bladder stone has formed it can grow so large that it actually blocks urine from leaving the body. Often infection has formed as well, since bacteria trapped in the bladder has time to colonize. Other causes of blockage could be a tumor (benign or malignant), although this is rare. Treatment involves dissolving or removing the stones surgically. Changes in diet and the addition of a homeopathic remedy can help to prevent future problems.

At times, old dog incontinence is simply due to old muscles that can no longer do their job. In this case diapers made for dogs might be the best option.

Incontinence in Dogs - Urinary Tract Infections and Other Causes

Dogs are usually such adjusting pets that they will wait for as long as necessary till they are let out to "go" in the garden. So it's a shock to be confronted by canine incontinence. You may find that your pet has started urinating in his sleep or even as he walks around. This is not an ordinary wake-up call but a red flag and should alert you to the possibility that your pet has contracted a bladder infection.

Here are some symptoms to look for:

Your pet may have excessive thirst;

He or she may begin to leak urine around the house;

If the dog will be in obvious pain while urinating.

Canine bladder infections must be treated as soon as possible. Usually a three-week-long course of antibiotics can take care of the infection. If it is ignored, a bladder infection can have potentially serious consequences, such as permanent bladder damage and incontinence.

However, urinary infections are not the only cause of canine urinary incontinence. Other problems that can cause dogs to constantly dribble urine include diabetes in which urine output significantly increases, bladder stones, hormonal disorders, neurological illnesses, and kidney problems.

Vets use a variety of tests to determine the cause of incontinence including urinalysis and other lab tests. You will need to take a sample of fresh urine from your pet, which is then cultured in a laboratory and analysed for bacteria. If the tests are positive for infection then antibiotic treatment follows. However, if the tests find no sign of infection, then the causes of incontinence must be examined further.

The next step would be to determine what could be done to prevent incontinence and help the dog. If the problems are because the dog cannot leave the house whenever he needs to urinate, the solution is a simple one. Sometimes, the dog may dribble urine because he is excited or upset. Training and attention may help to sort out this issue.

Neurological causes may be the cause of incontinence, as when the nerves connected to the bladder are not functioning well. This situation will need further investigation, and may be curable with medication. Finally, if nothing else, vets may examine what the dogs are ingesting - water, medications, and so on, that could play a part.

Medical treatments for incontinence

Vets have to resort to using hormones and decongestants when they cannot pinpoint causes of incontinence. DES (diethylstilbestrol) a man-made form of estrogen is usually prescribed for spayed female dogs. Owners must look out for signs of anemia in such dogs. Natural hormonal supplements and ovarian products can be substituted in such cases.

The decongestant PPA, often called Proin is useful when your pet suffers only from occasional accidents. It helps by tightening the sphincter muscle of the bladder, but can have fatal side effects if your pet has circulatory problems like high blood pressure and heart disease. Other side effects may be increased heart rate, difficulty in urination, bloodless gums, and weakness. There is the potential for seizures to occur.

In some difficult cases of incontinence, the two treatments can be combined. Occasionally, Imipramine, (an antidepressant called Tofranil) may be prescribed along with PPA to help with retention of urine in cases that do not respond to the other medications.

Those caregivers of pets who have had no luck with these man-made chemical treatments can look for alternative in natural medicine. Herbal and homeopathic supplements work to set the dog's health right as a whole, curing illnesses and creating and maintaining a healthy balance in the body.

Double Incontinence - Help For A Debilitating Condition

If you think that suffering from urinary incontinence is an embarrassing condition can you imagine having both urinary and faecal incontinence at the same time?  This is a condition that affects both men and women equally and when it is present it is described as double incontinence.

Fortunately this is not a common form of the condition but for those who have it the experience can be devastating.  There is still a social stigma attached to faecal incontinency and when combined with loss of control with the bladder it places the sufferer in a position where they may decide to withdraw from public and even family as well.  This can truly be a debilitating experience.

Surprisingly often times people with this form of incontinency do not discuss it with their physicians and that is simply a mistake in judgment.  Incontinence is not a natural part of the aging process and it can be treated.

Incontinence, be it urinary or faecal is not a disease unto itself but rather a symptom of an underlying condition and it is imperative that you discuss this with your doctor.  After an examination and testing, your doctor can render a diagnosis that identifies the causes and can then lay out a plan of therapy.

Treatment can be as simple as changes in diet or lifestyle but can also include an exercise regimen, medications or even surgery.  Your doctor will explain the options and together you can decide which is the best route for you to take.

Double incontinence is doubly troubling but it can be managed if not cured.  It is terribly embarrassing and it certainly restricts your movement and lifestyle but not addressing the problem, not seeking help will certainly not make your condition any better.  Go see your physician and get the help you need.

The Miracle of Incontinence Pads

To anyone suffering from either urinary or bowel incontinence the stigma associated with the condition can often be so powerful that they will become a social recluse, fearing to leave the house incase an incontinent episode causes public humiliation. In this situation it is no exaggeration to say that incontinence pads can be the cause of a miraculous turnaround.

In continence pads prevent the soiling of clothes by a sufferer of urinary incontinence or bowel incontinence. Of the millions who suffer from incontinence it is unlikely there is one who will openly tell everyone they meet they are incontinent. Incontinence is an embarrassing problem and one that people will go to great lengths to avoid becoming public. For some people that means never leaving their house for fear of public humiliation. Luckily, advances in the clothing and treatments available have meant that this fear can now be overcome with a range of useful, discrete and effective products.

Incontinence pads are amongst these solutions for incontinence sufferers and are designed to prevent leakage of urine onto clothing that will publicly show and stain. Purpose designed, they are comfortable, secure and made to offer minimum possible skin irritation. The pads are available in a range of different sizes and styles to cater to differing needs.

Unisex Disposable Shaped Pads - These pads are suitable for both men and women, and have been especially widened at the front and back and can be purchased in different levels of absorption from a mini pad for mild incontinence through to maxi pads for heavier leakage.

The Standard Pad - Standard pads can be purchased in two different sizes and are designed to offer a convenient, disposable pad. They are also conveniently sized so it is possible to carry spare pads around when out and about.

Absorbent Stick On Pads - These can be fastened with an adhesive strip and are designed for short term protection.

Unisex Disposable Dry Form Shaped Pads - These disposable pads are designed for those suffering from moderate to heavy incontinence and are super-absorbent. The wider shaped backing can deal with bowel incontinence and the protective leg barriers protect against leakage by repelling fluids.

Unisex Disposable Total Protection Pad - Ideal for people who are bed ridden, chair bound of physically handicapped, this incontinence pad is designed for total protection in cases of severe incontinence. They can handle double incontinence and come with water proof leg cuffs and an adjustable waist.

The Male Guard Pad - These specially shaped incontinence pads are to provide the ultimate in discreetness and protection. A miracle powder is used to ensure the wearer will always remain dry.

If you are considering incontinence pads it's a good idea to talk over your needs with someone who understands your situation and requirements. Different pads offer different levels of protection and discretion. It's important that you choose a pad that will cater to your level of incontinence adequately, and at the same time remain as discrete as possible.

Benefits of Adult Diapers

No one wants to deal with urinary incontinence and have to use adult diapers, but it is something that can strike for a variety of reasons. As the body ages, bladder muscles can become weakened and small amounts of urine will leak. All of the conditions that cause incontinence may not be able to be treated effectively with medications or medical intervention. Conditions such as stress incontinence or urge incontinence may benefit more from treatments that focus on strengthening the urinary muscles. Training is another method that is often used to treat incontinence. While these treatments may be helpful, they also may not completely eliminate the problem but only improve it slightly. There is still a need for adult diapers for patients struggling with this embarrassing problem.

Adult diapers were once something that was not talked about out in the open. Today we see television commercials and large displays of the products in the store. It is no longer taboo or frowned upon to have a bladder control problem. It seems as though the world has finally woken up to the very real problem that older adults have been facing for years. The accessibility of disposable diapers is one of the benefits of these products for those suffering from incontinence problems.

Diapers offer the wearer convenience. The person with urinary incontinence wears the diapers and disposes of them when they become wet. This is much less work than cloth diapers that must be removed and washed for a future use. While a cloth adult diaper may cost less in the long run, the inconvenience makes them a difficult choice for those who work or have an active lifestyle outside of the home.

Disposable adult diapers have varying degrees of absorbency. This allows the user to choose a product that best suits their needs. Instead of a one size fits all approach to urinary incontinence, the manufacturers of adult diapers create products that suit the needs of adults who have frequent bouts of incontinence and those who experience the problem only once in a while. There is no need to purchase a diaper that is extra thick if you only wear it in the event of an accident.

The products are available everywhere today. An adult diaper is not a specialty item and can be purchased in the grocery store, drug store and even online for those who are too embarrassed to buy them in public.

Urinary incontinence products have improved over the years and sufferers can find high quality products that are comfortable and absorbent for use during the day. Adult diapers offer those with urinary incontinence the freedom to go out in public without worrying about incontinence issues.

Incontinence Caregivers: Build Trust And Cooperation With Calmness, Compassion, And Sensitivity

Most caregivers for the elderly will eventually have to deal with some degree of incontinence in their patient or loved one, and it can be a very difficult, emotionally charged situation for everyone involved. But with an attitude of calmness, cooperation, and sensitivity, caregivers can make a huge difference.

Generally a side effect of illness (such as diabetes or urinary tract infection) or an existing condition like enlarged prostate or weakened pelvic muscles, age-related incontinence is a very common condition effecting literally millions of people over the age of 60.

Helping an older person cope with incontinence can be very challenging for caregivers, particularly if they are family members. Most older people find the condition humiliating and many will go to great lengths to deny or hide it, and may be upset or angry if it is mentioned.

This attitude can make it very difficult to provide the kind of help the older person needs, and many caregivers are reluctant to even try to discuss it. But age-related incontinence is a condition that rarely if ever improves or goes away on its own; ignored, it can trap the older person in a miserable cycle of fear, self-doubt, isolation and shame.

Helping the older person accept the condition and introducing the use of protective products such as incontinence pants, pads, devices and bedding can be among the most helpful and constructive things a caretaker can do. Here are some tips for caregivers facing this situation.

Be sensitive and compassionate. It's crucial for caregivers to understand how profoundly upsetting incontinence episodes can be for the elderly; not only are they excruciatingly embarrassing, they create feelings of self-doubt, loss of control, and plunging self-esteem. Many older people consider even mild, infrequent incontinence episodes to be proof that they're no longer capable adults, and they will take whatever measures necessary to hide the condition.

If you find evidence that an accident has occurred, the last thing to do is confront the older person and demand an explanation. Simply clean up whatever needs to be cleaned without comment; making a fuss will only make the situation worse.

Stay calm and patient, and hang on to your sense of humor. The more upset you as a caregiver become when an incontinence episode occurs, the more ashamed and upset the older person will be, and the less willing he or she will be to trust you to help them. Treat incontinence as what it is - a medical condition that can be managed. Don't dramatize, and don't let the older person turn it into a catastrophe.

Never scold or nag. Remember that age-related incontinence is totally involuntary; no amount of disapproval or retraining will help.

Living With Urinary Incontinence? Don't Let it Be Your Secret

Incontinence is the involuntary discharge of urine or faeces due to a lack of control by the bladder (Urinary Incontinence) or bowel (Faecal Incontinence). The excretory system of urine is called the urinary tract and comprises: the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder and the urethra. Urine is filtered by the kidneys and transported via two tubes (ureters) into the bladder. Several layers of muscle form the wall of the bladder; the thickest is called the detrusor muscle. At the junction of the bladder and the uretha is the sphincter muscle whose function is to control the flow of urine through the urethra. A healthy bladder is capable of expanding to accommodate 300-500 ml of fluid. At 200ml. we get the first urge to urinate. When this occurs, the detrusor muscle contracts, the sphincter muscle relaxes and urine is forced out through the urethra. Once finished, the process is reversed: the bladder relaxes and the sphincter contracts, stopping the flow of urine.

Your ability to control urination requires: a normal anatomy, a normally functioning nervous system and being able to determine and respond to the warning signs of impending urination. Urinary incontinence occurs when you are unable to control the flow, causing leakage or in severe cases an inability to retain urine.

Types, Causes and Treatment

There are five recognized types of urinary incontinence: Urge, Stress, Overflow, Functional and Mixed Incontinence.

- Urge Incontinence - Described as a sudden and uncontrollable urge to urinate and unable to get to the toilet in time to avoid loss of a substantial amount of urine. It can also manifest itself by an intense urge to urinate when there is only a small amount of urine in the bladder, resulting in the person straining to urinate.

The leading causes of urge incontinence have been identified as: neurological disorders, urinary tract infections and changes in the bladder leading to its inability to contract effectively.

Effective treatment includes: pelvic muscle exercises, bladder retraining, biofeedback and drugs in persistent cases.

- Stress Incontinence -- The most common type of this affliction. This is an involuntary loss of urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh, jog or perform any other activity which may increase pressure on the bladder.

This occurs due to weakened support for the pelvic muscles and/or weakness in the sphincter muscle.

The treatment for urge incontinence is the same as that of stress, however, surgery may also be recommended.

- Mixed Incontinence - This is the diagnosis for persons presenting the symptoms of both urge and stress incontinence.

A widely held belief is that people with stress incontinence frequently empty their bladders prematurely, conditioning the bladder to function at a low capacity.

Treatment is focused on the primary cause, employing the previously mentioned methods.

- Overflow Incontinence - In this situation there is frequent leakage without the person having any prior urge to urinate. The urine stream is usually weak.

This can be due to an obstruction in the bladder, causing it to become too full and eventually leaking. Other probable causes are: neurological disorders, medication, constipation, another medical condition (enlarged prostrate) and post-surgery side effects.

This is usually treated through a change in diet, drugs or surgery.

- Functional Incontinence -- This is not associated with any problem in the person's urinary tract but due to a pre-existing condition such as: a physical or cognitive impediment, restricted mobility, nervous system disorders, or an inability to communicate. This affliction is very prevalent among people needing long-term care.

There are no treatments in this situation but there's an assortment of incontinent supplies such as: mattress covers, pads and adult diapers to be employed in this situation.

The Silent Affliction

Let there be no misconceptions, incontinence is not an affliction of the aged. In fact adults of any age can develop this ailment with women being more at risk than men. This being due to anatomical differences and the changes brought on by pregnancy and childbirth. The risks increase with age however, because as the body ages, muscles weaken making urine retention more difficult. Many people with incontinence suffer in silence. Excretion has always been an embarrassing topic, instead of seeking help most people try to manage the situation by themselves even keeping it from their doctor. This can often lead to the development of additional problems including: low self-esteem, social withdrawal, isolation, and depression. This need not be so; in most cases incontinence can be treated. If you are suffering in silence or think you may have a problem, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.

Adult Diaper Use Is Safe

Not only is the use of adult diaper products safe, it is also a great deal more sanitary than not using a product specifically designed to handle urine leaks. Diapers for adults are not the same thing as sanitary napkins and provide more absorbency than these products can offer. There is a wide range of products available for those suffering from incontinence or bladder control problems that will meet the needs of each individual user.

Incontinence problems can cause skin irritation when the skin is exposed to urine for even small lengths of time. The use of adult disposable diapers removes the moisture from the skin immediately by absorbing the urine into the padding of the diaper. The product prevents the skin from being irritated by urine and some products can absorb large amounts of urine for those who suffer from extreme bladder control issues.

Many adults suffer from a complete inability to control the bladder muscles and may not even be able to recognize or feel the need to urinate. These adults require a very absorbent type of diaper that can remove the moisture from the skin and prevent serious deterioration. Disposable diapers allow caregivers to quickly change the undergarments and dispose of the used product easily.

Using a disposable adult diaper is also safe after a surgical procedure that may have temporarily caused an incontinence problem such as prostate surgery. These patients are able to go about their daily business without being confined to the house because of temporary incontinence. Patients who have had surgery to correct an incontinence problem can use the adult garments as added protection until their incontinence symptoms are improved.

The materials used to make the adult diapers absorbent are completely safe for their intended use. The materials on the interior of the diaper absorb the urine, while the outer materials prevent it from leaking out of the diaper. These materials do not cause any skin irritation or harm when you are wearing them.

Most of the very absorbent adult diapers can hold much more than most people require in their adult diaper. Incontinence for many people is largely made up of small instances of urine leakage during activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting heavy objects. Those without any control over their bladder muscles require the stronger absorbency products.

The benefits of adult diapers far outweigh any inconvenience that they may cause. It is true that an adult diaper will never feel like your own underwear, but many of the products are comfortable to wear for long periods when they are dry. Finally, the adult diaper brings flexibility and mobility to the lives of many people suffering from incontinence problems. Using these products will not cause any ill health effects or discomfort.

Simple Solutions For Incontinence

More than 13 million Americans have trouble controlling their bladders. Urinary incontinence is not a disease. It's a symptom of an underlying issue such as diabetes, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease or even a chronic bladder infection.

Obese people face heightened risk for incontinence. So do smokers and ladies, particularly those who have recently had a baby. Passage of the baby via the birth canal frequently damages the abdominal muscles responsible for holding and releasing urine.

Incontinence can frequently be prevented or controlled. If you're incontinent - or are worried that you might become incontinent - avoid caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, chocolate, artificial sweeteners and other bladder irritants. Urinate prior to and after intercourse to expel infection - causing bacteria and drink lots of water.

Don't drink big quantities of water at one time, nevertheless. Doing so causes the bladder to fill too rapidly. Have one sip every 5 to 10 minutes throughout the day.

Ladies: To keep pelvic floor muscles strong do Kegel exercises. Kegel workouts involve controlling the muscles involved in incontinence. Squeeze the muscle for 3 seconds at a time working your way up to 10 seconds at a time, then relax the muscle for 10 seconds and repeat.

Women with recurrent bladder infections ought to take a cranberry pill with each meal. The pill contains compounds that keep infection - causing bacteria from sticking to bladder walls. Cranberries and cranberry juice also contain these compounds but at lower levels.

Men: Ask your doctor about taking a zinc supplement and saw palmetta extract. Both have been shown to prevent or relieve prostate enlargement.

They're are four causes of incontinence and the first thing you are required to do is to determine what the cause is.

1. Stress incontinence is linked with the weakness of the urinary sphincter, the circular valve - like muscle around the bladder neck and urethra that controls the flow of urine. Coughing, laughing, and etc. exert much more pressure on the bladder and the sphincter then it can contain and urine spills out.

2. Urge incontinence occurs when overexcited nerves leading to involuntary contraction of bladder muscles occurs. You have a sudden urge to urinate but can't reach the toilet in time.

3. Overflow incontinence occurs when weak bladder muscles or urinary obstruction makes it hard to empty the bladder. Urine eventually overflows like water over a dam.

4. Functional incontinence is a transient problem associated with stool impaction, restricted mobility, vaginal irritation and other conditions.

Incontinent Bed Pads - Protection That Provides a Great Night's Sleep

If you suffer from incontinence, how much overnight travelling have you done recently? How many vacations have you been on since you've had this condition. If you are like most people with incontinence, the answer is going to be none or very little simply because you are afraid of having an accident on some hotel bed. Well there really isn't any reason to worry about that if you get disposable incontinent bed pads.

These bed pads come in a number of configurations to fit your needs. There are super pads that are designed to absorb moderate to large amounts of fluid that simply lay atop the bottom sheet of the bed. These pads quickly absorb the urine to its core leaving the surface of the pad dry. A water proof backing insures that the sheet and mattress remain dry and stain free.

A lighter version of the super pad is commonly available and can handle small amounts of fluid. Because they are not as thick, these pads are flexible enough to use to protect furniture as well.

In both instances the incontinent bed pads are disposable so clean up is a breeze. They are light and compact making them an ideal way to take the worry out of overnight travel.

But what about at home? Isn't your bed just as important as some strange hotel bed? If you've checked the prices on mattresses recently you have a good idea of just how big an investment you are sleeping on. The disposable pads will work just as well on your home bed but you may want to add even more protection by using a mattress cover as well.

These covers are also super absorbent and are a great idea particularly if you tend to toss and turn while sleeping. Using a combination of incontinent bed pads and a mattress cover will give you the ultimate in protection and greatly increase your confidence allowing for a peaceful night's sleep.

Powered by Poop - Creating Fuel From Dirty Diapers

Yes, we're talking about recycling. In today's age of recyclers - who would have thought that dirty diapers could be recycled into anything? Thanks to those great minds who thought up the idea and went to work on making it a reality.

As we all know, adult diapers and infant diapers are currently burned or buried in landfills. These disposal methods that either create CO2 or are in danger of releasing hazardous substances and other pollution to the surrounding area. But there's a green use that's been found for these convenient, necessary, incontinence products.

In Quebec, Canada, a plant is being built that will turn dirty diapers into diesel by using pyrolosis. What is Pyrolysis? Pyrolysis heats up the diapers in a closed, controlled environment at temperatures of up to 600C without air, essentially breaking them down thermally - and with no emissions. If you want to know more about pyrolysis, Google it to get the whole picture. Also read back issues of Scientific American & look for an article in OMNI magazine entitled "Oil from Anything". Tyson is currently making Diesel fuel (cleaner than what you get from the pump) from chicken and turkey guts, feathers, feet, etc.

The process in Quebec will use infant diapers all the way to adult diapers. While this fuel probably won't be utilized for diesel vehicles, it can be utilized in almost any industrial application.

As for the process in Japan, because their adult diapers and baby diapers are manufactured differently [Japans diapers are primarily paper vs plastic/polymer combination used in North America] - the end result is a different type of fuel. A bacteria free, odorless, pellet that can be used in biomass boilers or heating systems.

So, yet one more way to recycle! Using soiled adult diapers and infant diapers to make fuels that we need in everyday life which reduces the impact on our landfills.

Adult Pull Ups and the Management of Incontinence

Bladder health is something that we all need to be aware of, yet two-thirds of individuals through the ages of 30-70 have yet to talk about with their doctors. Incontinence is common for both genders but women tend to be at a greater risk than men do. If you experience any type of incontinence issue, you need to consider using quality products like adult pull ups as they can give you back your dignity as you manage an embarrassing condition.

Incontinence is when a person has involuntary loss of control of the bladder or bowels, which results in urine loss or loss of fecal matter. There are various types of incontinence and each requires different incontinence products to manage them:

• Stress Incontinence

This is where the pelvic sphincter or muscles have been damaged, leading to bladder leaks when it is put under some form of physical stress. Such stress could include coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting a heavy object. This type of incontinence is more common in women, especially if they have given birth to several children.

• Urge Incontinence

This is where a person experiences an uncontrollable and urgent urge to urinate while at the same time being unable to prevent this release of urine from the bladder. This type of incontinence results from nerve damage that causes brain signals not to be received by the bladder. This could be due to a stroke, multiple sclerosis or mental illness. It is also possible to experience both urge incontinence and stress incontinence, a condition known as mixed incontinence.

• Overflow Incontinence

This is where the brain receives incorrect signals from the bladder as to how full it is. The bladder then fills up and starts to overflow. Causes of this incontinence could be diabetes, pelvic trauma or injury to the spinal cord.

• Incontinence as a Result of Surgery

Patients who undergo certain operations, such as prostate surgery, caesarean sections or hysterectomies may end up suffering from incontinence. This can also be the case after surgery of the lower intestine or of the rectum in trying to treat cancerous growths. This is because the surgery may interfere with the pelvic muscles causing them to weaken. This in turn may cause them not operate properly and to be prone to leaks.

• Functional Incontinence

This type of incontinence is caused by a lack of mobility or mental capacity required to take oneself to a washroom or to go through the process of relieving one self.

• Anal Incontinence

This type of incontinence is also known as fecal or double incontinence and occurs when the nervous system fails. As a result, one's body is not able to control its bowel movements. This type of incontinence is mainly found among old and frail patients and usually results in both the loss of urine and fecal matter.

Some products for incontinence focus on using light pads that have an absorbent core and can be worn with traditional underwear. Other products may be a bit bigger as they come in the form of a traditional looking diaper and are geared to help people who have greater amounts of urine loss or have a higher frequency of urine loss. Speak to your doctor about your condition as you could have a different health problem that is tied to incontinence. Women often wait almost 7 years before they will even go and talk to their doctor about incontinence. You need to go and talk to them quickly so that you don't end up having to suffer from this embarrassing condition for longer than you need to. Using adult pull-ups can be a real life-saver for people who have been too embarrassed to leave their home due to incontinence being unpredictable.

Buying Adult Diapers Online and in Bulk Saves You Money

One of the easiest ways to saving money on adult diapers is to buy in bulk. In fact, it's the most cost effective option for those with moderate to severe incontinence. Find an online store that carries hospital grade incontinence supplies, and you will generally find them less expensive than what you would find at your local stores. Not only are they less expensive, but because you are buying hospital grade products, you use fewer products.

For example, when you compare the absorbency of the incontinence products at your local stores, many of those products only hold a minimal amount of liquid. So, people 'double up' their diapers to try and make them more absorbent. This ultimately backfires because 'doubling up' causes skin conditions. Plus, you're doubling up your costs of the diapers.

When you use hospital grade adult diapers, the amount of materials in the diaper can hold, in some cases, up to 2 litres of volume! Of course, that is on the extreme end; for those living with heavy incontinence. So you would expect a product like that to cost about $4 per adult diaper, right? That's not the case.

For instance, the Unique Wellness Super Absorbent Adult Diaper will only cost about $1.50 per adult diaper - and can be worn for 8-10 hours! Many of our customers tell us that the products they are using, they change 7-10 times per day - at 90 cents per adult diaper. Look at the price savings - Unique Wellness Super Absorbent Diapers @ 3 changes X $1.50 = $4.50. Compared to the products available at your local stores @ 10 changes X 0.90 = $9.00 per day! Hmmm - what could you do with that extra money?

This is extremely important if you're living on a fixed income. Altho incontinence isn't guaranteed with aging, may of our seniors live with this issue. Many seniors are on fixed incomes. So, having cost savings like these are crucial to them.

Put money back in your budget and use it on something else. Buy hospital grade adult diapers and incontinence products.

Overcoming Male Incontinence

Incontinence is a difficult subject to broach, and in many cases it is a problem that men suffer in silence, too embarrassed to discuss with their doctor and mortified at the thought of their friends and family finding out. Incontinence is an 'invisible problem' swept under the floor mat of social convention. Quite simply it is something that is not discussed and advice is not readily available on. So this article breaks the social mold a little by giving a grounding in male incontinence, what it is, what types can be experienced and most importantly what you can do about it.

What is Incontinence?

Incontinence can effect either the urinary tract or the bowels. Urinary incontinence results in involuntary leakage of urine from the penis. Bowel Incontinence can either lead to involuntary flatulence or involuntary bowel motions. Obviously neither form is desirable and both can cause acute social embarrassment. For this reason many men will not seek medical assistance and become increasingly reclusive as the situation worsens.

What Types Of Male Incontinence Are There?

  • Urge Incontinence - This form of incontinence is marked by the sudden and uncontrollable urge to urinate. Usually there will be insufficient time to get to the bathroom before urine leakage occurs.

  • Stress Incontinence - This form of incontinence is caused by pressure being placed on the bladder. It does not refer to emotional stress, only the physical stress on the bladder which leads to involuntary leakage of urine. Stress Incontinence can occur when lifting heavy objects, coughing, sneezing and even laughing.

  • Overflow Incontinence - This is a result of the brain not receiving and sending the correct signals from a full bladder. As the name implies the bladder becomes full and cannot support any more liquid. The resulting overflow leads to leaking of urine.

What Can Be Done To Treat Male Incontinence?

There are a number of treatments that can be tried depending on the severity and frequency of the individuals symptoms. The most important step is actually acknowledging the problem, and though this can be very embarrassing it is critical. No treatment can begin where the doctor is not aware of the problem and sometimes once the problem is known the solution is very simple.

Usually the first step will be a urine analysis. This is to look for any infection in the urine and where this is found the problem may be cleared up with something as simple as a course of antibiotics. It's an incredibly simple solution to a problem that some people will suffer in silence for years and allow to effect their entire lives.

If an infection is not the problem there are still a number of possible options. Kegel Exercises may be prescribed to rebuild the strength of the Pelvic muscles, and liquid intake may be monitored and controlled. Where the standard treatments are not successful it is possible that surgery will be used. Surgery has a very high success rate but because it is an invasive treatment is usually not tried unless all other options have been exhausted.

Urge Incontinence in Women - Major Cause of Falls in Women Over 65

Consider this for a moment. Nearly 40% of women over 60 will develop urge incontinence a condition whose principal symptom is an uncontrollable urge to use the bathroom. When the urge hits, the typical reaction is to race to the bathroom to avoid having an accident. But what happens when this occurs at night and the woman has to hurrying through a darkened bedroom, down a darkened hallway to get to the toilet? Would you be surprised to learn that incontinence in women is being blamed for an increasing number of injuries due to falling.

Well it's true.

Falls involving the elderly can be life changing events. A broken hip may put a person in a position where they no longer have the mobility they need to take care of themselves. By the age of 65, fully a third of all women can expect to experience an injury due to a fall. Having that falling injury as a result of rushing to get to a bathroom is terribly unfortunate because urge incontinence can be treated using a wide range of therapies from biofeedback to medication to surgery.

What's more, in a study done of women with incontinence versus women without, those with urge incontinence were 25% more likely to have an injury from a fall. Of those who did take a tumble, almost a third experienced a fractured bone.

If you are a woman over 60 with urge incontinence, or if you have a relative or close friend who is, you really need to see your health care provider and discuss this condition and lay out a plan to cure it or effectively manage it. It shouldn't be embarrassing and it is certainly not part of the normal aging process. This condition does not have to expose you to additional injury from falls if you simply take action to address it.

Urge incontinence in women is simply a health threat that can be easily dealt with. Considering the risks that are attached to it as a cause of falls, doesn't it make sense to make an appointment with your doctor soon?

Depend Diapers Can Shield You From Odors

When it comes to managing incontinence in the right way, shielding yourself from odors is one of the most important things. Odor protection is important as it will allow you to feel confident when you are in public. Incontinence can lead to embarrassment and often forces many people to avoid social situations. Don't let this happen to you! Choose the right adult diapers that will prevent you from public embarrassment. Depend diapers have built-in odor protection, allowing you to feel confident in yourself once again. The odor protection with Depend diapers can prevent others from being able to detect that you even suffer from incontinence.

To find the best incontinence supplies it helps to know which form of incontinence you suffer from. The majority of people suffer from urinary incontinence. This is when you have the involuntarily loss of urine. For many people urinary incontinence will come on suddenly. You will not have warning that the bladder is going to release urine and you often will not be able to make it to the restroom in time. When this occurs, you should plan on wearing adult diapers through the day as they will capture the urine that is lost.

There are also incontinence pads that can shield you from odors. These pads are great for light urine loss. The Depend pads can be discreetly placed in your regular underwear. For individuals that are embarrassed about incontinence, the pads can help you maintain your dignity since you can continue wearing your normal underwear. The pads do not make noise either when you walk around. One other benefit to the Depend pads is that they also include the odor shield. This will protect others from smelling urine if you do end up having an accident in public.

The Depend brand sells a large variety of incontinence products to choose from. Purchase incontinence products based on your gender. Though urinary incontinence is similar in both genders, the way the urine is released is different. Each gender needs a product that will capture the urine in the area where it is lost. Try out multiple Depend products to find the one that does absorb the urine properly and will give you maximum protection.

Every incontinence product you use needs to not only absorb well but it needs to be comfortable. If the adult diaper is too tight on the skin it can end up leading to rashes and rubbing on the skin. The adult diapers are meant to be comfortable. Since they will be part of your lifestyle now, it helps to search for the products that do fit snugly but do not rub. Try moving up a size if the adult diapers are too tight around the legs. If they are too loose, they can lead to leaking.

It helps to shop for incontinence supplies that are affordable. When you are wearing them daily, the disposable products can become expensive in a hurry. Opt for the products that you can afford. Washable incontinence products might suit your budget easier. Depend actually can help you here if you have a flex spending account. There are certain situations where insurance companies will pay for the supplies.

How can you dispose of the adult diapers when you are in public? Using small plastic bags with odor shield or bags that are scented can prevent you from embarrassment. This way you can toss them into the trash without the worry that other people will smell them when they pass by the trash container. Managing incontinence doesn't need to be an embarrassment anymore thanks to odor shield offered by Depend diapers!

How to Select the Right Size of Depend

One of the biggest challenges for anyone experiencing incontinence is finding the right incontinence product to help them manage this problem. It can be frustrating to find exactly what works to meet your needs. One of the most popular and widely used incontinence product lines comes from Depend. This line of products has been around for a long time helping incontinence patients, find the right solution for their incontinence management needs.

The Depend products offers a wide variety of incontinence supplies that makes it easy for anyone with incontinence to find the right incontinence product or combination of products for them to use. Finally, there is Depend underwear for the person with incontinence, who wants to maintain an active lifestyle and needs incontinence protection, which can be worn under normal clothing.

One of the most important considerations to keep in mind, when it comes to incontinence products is the fit. If the wearer of the incontinence undergarment or adult diaper does not have the proper fit, they will not receive the ultimate protection from their incontinence undergarment. If you are going to choose Depend for your incontinence undergarment, there are certain things to keep in mind. Here is what you need to know about how to select the right size of Depend-

Understand that there is a wide range of sizes-
There is no need to settle for a "one size fits all" incontinence undergarment. This means that small people do not have to feel like they are swimming in their incontinence undergarment, while larger individuals can also be comfortable wearing theirs. Depend offers a wide range of sizes from small to extra-large. This means that the person who will be wearing the Depend can find just the right size for them. It has to be stressed enough that good fit in any incontinence undergarment is crucial. Not only will this make the wearer more comfortable, it will give better protection. If someone is wearing an incontinence undergarment that is too small or too large, gaps and chafing could occur contributing to leakage and accidents.

Understand that there is a difference between Depend for men and for women-
At one time, all incontinence undergarments were uni-sex oriented. Unfortunately, this did not provide the protection that many incontinence sufferers needed. Today, manufacturers of incontinence products realize that each gender has unique needs, when it comes to incontinence supplies. Depend address these needs, by providing Depend for men and Depend for women. Caregivers and wearers of incontinence products should not assume that all incontinence supplies are the same.

Understand that the lifestyle choices of the wearer should be considered when choosing a type of Depend-
From Depend diapers to Depend undergarments, there is an incontinence product for every type of person, who needs one. From incontinence sufferers, who have limited mobility or who are bedridden to incontinence sufferers, who want to carry on with their normal activities, there is a Depend incontinence product for them. Many users of Depend undergarments want to use their incontinence product by wearing normal clothes, while others may need something different in order to help their caregiver.

Discretion While Wearing Diapers for Incontinence

One of the main concerns for those who are dealing with incontinence is how they can be discreet when wearing an adult diaper. For many people this can seem like an overwhelming challenge as they confront the many issues that surround incontinence management. Sadly, many people begin to be more reclusive and stay at home for the fear that others will know that they are wearing diapers. The good news is that there is no reason to do this. By following some simple tips you can wear adult diapers discreetly while managing your incontinence. This will allow you to maintain your normal activities while working, traveling, socializing and even working out. Here are some tips to get you started-

• Have a plan - The first thing to do is to have a plan. Are you going out to restaurant? Then you will need to know where the restroom is and where you can go to change your diaper, if needed. When you are able to plan how you will manage your incontinence, you will feel more in control which will lead you to be able to wear your adult diaper more discreetly.

• Wear the right adult diaper - It is important to choose the right adult diaper. If you are not wearing a diaper that is the right size or the right absorbency, it will be much harder to manage your incontinence discreetly. Take the time to investigate what options are available in diapers. Different lines of incontinence supplies use different sizing and absorbency. By trying a few different diapers you can choose the one that will fit your needs the best. This will allow you to wear it discreetly and comfortably. Keep in mind that diapers are made for both genders, so choose the one that is right for your needs.

• Choose your clothes carefully - If you want to be discreet when wearing an adult diaper then you will need to give some thought to what clothing you choose to wear. At one time incontinence sufferers have to use oversize clothing to simply hide their diaper. Today, there is a wide variety of diapers that can fit under the latest fashions. However, you should be careful to make sure that your clothing fits well. This will eliminate the need for pulling and adjusting in order to make sure that your clothing is covering your adult diaper.

• Stock plenty of adult diapers - If you are looking for diapers then you will have little chance of managing your incontinence discreetly. It is important that you take the time to stock diapers wherever you may need them. A desk drawer, a bag in your car, and any other place that you may need diapers can help you to be able to simply grab one when you are out and continue managing your incontinence discreetly. Keep in mind that today many diapers fit easily into bags, briefcases, and even your pocket for easy and discreet use.

• Know the restroom landscape - Part of many people's fear about leaving home when they have incontinence is the need to change their diapers. However, if you take the time to determine where restrooms are and where you can easily change your diaper you will be able to much more discreet. Today, due to the internet you can look at the floor plan of most public places. This will allow you to simply slip off when the time comes and discreetly change your diaper and return to what you want to be doing.

How to Prevent Adult Diaper Rash

One of the major issues in dealing with incontinence is preventing adult diaper rash. Adults who have to deal with either urinary or fecal incontinence can be at risk for developing rashes. It is important to understand that diaper rash is a form of skin irritation that comes under the category of contact dermatitis. Most of time, it presents itself as redness or as red bumps, but if it is allowed to develop it can turn into blisters or open sores. If the diaper rash is allowed to develop too far without treatment it can cause skin breakdown which puts the person with incontinence at risk for serious and even life threatening infections.

In order to prevent adult diaper rash it is important to know what causes it. One of the main causes of diaper rash is when the person with incontinence wears the wrong size incontinence undergarment. It is crucial that whether the person is wearing incontinence underwear or an adult diaper that it be sized correctly for the wearer. If the person is using incontinence supplies that don't fit they are far more likely to have rubbing or chaffing that can increase the chances of developing adult diaper rash. This makes it crucial that the person with incontinence or their caregiver choose the right size and gender of the incontinence product. Keep in mind that there are incontinence products for men and incontinence products for women.

Another major cause of diaper rashes is sensitivity to the chemicals and dyes that can be in certain incontinence products. This means that it is important to choose incontinence supplies that are not full of perfumes, chemicals, and dyes that can irritate the skin and begin an adult diaper rash. Many people who find that they have extra sensitive skin turn to using washable incontinence products next to their skin in order to minimize exposure to these irritants. If further protection is needed then disposable incontinence supplies can be layered on top of them. In addition, it is important to choose incontinence cleaning supplies that are fragrance free and are gentle to the skin. This also helps to prevent adult diaper rash from developing.

Another preventive step to preventing adult diaper rash is to make sure that the person who is wearing the incontinence undergarment has it changed as soon as it becomes wet or soiled. When sensitive skin remains exposed to urine and stool this opens the possibility of an adult diaper rash. If the incontinent person is not able to change their own incontinence undergarment the caregiver will need to be vigilant about changing it immediately.

Finally, the person with incontinence or the caregiver should take extra care to make sure that the skin is completely cleaned and dried. Again, if the incontinent person has difficulty with mobility the caregiver may need to take an active role in the cleaning process. This includes: using wipes that are specially formulated to deal with incontinence, patting not rubbing the skin dry and applying a moisturizer or skin barrier cream to help keep the skin protected. Keep in mind that this is especially important if the person is older since aging skin can be extra delicate and fragile. Finally, a clean incontinence undergarment should be put back on. Taking all of these steps will help to prevent the serious problem of adult diaper rash.

Travel the Globe While Managing Incontinence

Whether travelling by train, car, plane or other means, incontinence should not get in the way of your fun when going on holiday. There's absolutely no reason to miss out on travelling during your Golden Years; there are many great products and equipment available to assist you. Useful strategies are also available to make travelling easier than ever before.

Be Prepared When Travelling -

If you are travelling to your destination by plane, choose an aisle seat for easier access to the restroom. Make sure to scout out precisely where it is in the airplane upon taking your seat. When you're flying, you can move around and easily get up to make your way to it when you want to. Also, knowing exactly where it is can lessen your stress and allow you to relax and enjoy your flight.

When travelling by car, make sure to inform the driver of any bathroom requests as soon as you sense that you will need one. Giving the driver an early warning can help prevent accidents. However, when you're on trips that are much longer than usually expected, high absorbency pads and other incontinence products allow a longer time between breaks to the toilet. This can reduce the awkward feeling of constantly requesting stops during the trip.

Irrespective of the form of transport you're using, there are a few common sense factors that can help. Before leaving, make sure you pay a visit to the restroom. During the journey, avoid drinking unless absolutely necessary. Try chewing a stick of gum or sucking on a hard candy to keep your self occupied. Keeping your bladder as empty as possible can have a very positive impact on incontinence while travelling.

Scout Out Your Destination -

No matter where you are staying on your holiday, one of the first things you should do is determine where the restrooms are located. If you are going to be at a resort and will be spending a lot of time poolside, look around and determine where the nearest restroom is - and whether it is handicap accessible or friendly. When combined with high quality incontinence products and mobility equipment, having this kind of knowledge ahead of time can allow you to truly relax during your vacation.

Keep in mind that accidents do happen - even on vacation. The important thing is not allowing them to ruin your fun. By using the right products, you can keep your confidence level up and not worry so much about accidents. Remember: being on holiday means leaving your worries behind.

Make that your mantra, and your trip will go as smoothly as possible!

Save Money on This Necessity - Adult Diapers

Many adults suffer from a complete or limited inability to control the bladder muscles. Many are not even be able to recognize or feel the need to urinate. Some do feel the sensation - but too late to be able to get to a bathroom. Those living with these issues require a very absorbent adult diaper, adult brief, incontinence liner or incontinence pad that can remove the moisture from the skin & prevent serious deterioration. Disposable diapers allow you, or your caregiver, to quickly change the soiled adult diaper or adult brief & dispose of the used product quickly & easily.

It's important to realize how important it is to use the right equipment for the job! For incontinence issues - use incontinence products rather than sanitary pads. Sanitary pads are not designed to handle urine leaks. Adult diapers & adult briefs provide more absorbency than sanitary napkins can offer. Thankfully, there are many products that offer varying degrees of absorbency to match the needs of those living with incontinence.

Many incontinence products available in your local retail stores, big box stores, supermarkets, etc, do not hold enough volume for those living with incontinence to live normal lives. They leak, they rip, they bunch - not to mention they are very expensive - especially if you take into account the fact that frequently, you have to layer for additional protection. This layering can then lead to skin issues - rashes, hives, bacterial & yeast infections - and odor!

This is why it's important if you live with incontinence issues to buy hospital grade products. Hospital grade products absorb more, they wick the moisture away from your skin and therefore reduce the chances of rashes, hives, odor & other skin issues. The materials on the interior of the diaper absorb the urine & odors, while the outer shell prevents fluids from leaking out of the diaper. Don't let 'cloth like shell' fool you! These really hold the liquids in, but because they are 'cloth like' they don't rub & irritate your skin like diapers of old did.

Also, because hospital grade incontinence products absorb more, you spend less on the initial product, but because it holds more, you don't have to layer - and you use fewer incontinence supplies, creams, wipes, etc. So you spend less on your adult diapers, adult briefs, incontinence liners & incontinence pads, as well as all of the other products needed to manage incontinence.

With hospital grade incontinence products, you can get out without worries of leaks and odors. Go to lunch, go have coffee, go play golf, go to the movies - go on hikes & walks - don't let your incontinence run your life - manage your incontinence issues with hospital grade products - and you can get out and live again!

Coping With Fecal Incontinence As a Side Effect of Chronic Constipation

For many people with chronic constipation they cannot imagine that things can get much worse. However, one of the most unpleasant side effects of chronic constipation can have to cope with fecal incontinence. Fecal incontinence often happens to people who have chronic constipation due to having an accidental bowel movement from a laxative working. This sudden bowel movement can be anything from a slight soiling to a complete loss of stool. Because of this it is imperative that you have the right incontinence product to use if you are dealing with chronic constipation. There are many different incontinence products that can be used effectively in this situation.

There are many different incontinence supplies that can be beneficial to have on hand. From complete incontinence underwear to different types of incontinence pads anyone who is dealing with fecal incontinence as a result of chronic constipation can be prepared to manage it. In addition, it is important to keep in mind that there are incontinence products for men and incontinence products for women so that the unique needs of each gender can be met. All of these incontinence products and more can be bought on sites that sell adult incontinence products.

Once you have the right incontinence product there are tips that can help you better deal with fecal incontinence that is brought on by chronic constipation. Some of these tips are-

• Use the right incontinence product-

It is crucial to take the time to determine what type of incontinence product you need to use. If your fecal incontinence is only mild then using an incontinence pad might be enough. However, if you are experiencing or are even prone to experiencing complete loss of bowel control then you may need to consider using an incontinence undergarment whether it is incontinence underwear or an adult diaper.

• Always have a plan-

Whether you are going out to work or for fun, it is important to have a plan. Many people carry an emergency kit that has a change of clothes, special incontinence wipes, powder or odor absorbing lotions, and their incontinence product. This way if the worst should happen you can be prepared to change your incontinence undergarment, clean up and neutralize the odor.

• Work with your doctor-

Both chronic constipation and fecal incontinence are never normal. You should never feel that you simply have to live with these conditions. You should also never let your doctor tell you that there is nothing that can be done. Most health care professionals realize that there are treatments for both the chronic constipation and the resulting fecal incontinence. If you are not satisfied with your doctor's diagnosis then you should seek out a different medical opinion. Keep in mind that while treatment can be lengthy resolving these issues can be done successfully and most people can continue with all of their normal activities.

• Seek out support-

Today the stigma surrounding these issues are not as deep as it once was. There are many different support groups where you can find support and helpful information from other people who are and have successfully dealt with both chronic constipation and fecal incontinence. Check with your local hospital, community resources, and even your doctor for recommendations.

While chronic constipation and fecal incontinence can be difficult to deal with they can be effectively managed by having a plan, seeking medical help, finding support, and using the right incontinence product.

Incontinence - How To Stay Dry Through the Holidays

While the holidays are always supposed to be a time of good cheer, the reality is that it can be extremely stressful. If you suffer from incontinence, you can make that cheerful season even more stressful by worrying about public accidents, or you can do a little prior planning and make it a fun experience.

For starters you really want to watch your intake of foods and drinks that can aggravate your condition. The holidays are always tempting us with spicy foods, fantastic coffee drinks and every form of alcohol known to man. You don't have to completely deny yourself of these tasty treats just keep in mind what is a natural diuretic and what irritates the bladder and go easy on those choices.

The holiday season can mean traveling and this is always a concern for people who suffer with incontinence. If you are going to be staying in a hotel or a family member's home, take along a supply of disposable bed covers and you'll not have to worry about soiling the sheets. These covers are light weight and easy to travel with and can provide you with the confidence to allow you to get a good night's sleep.

If you're driving to a destination, make regular planned rest stops so you can relieve yourself. Frequent stops will minimize the risk of an accident and if you have them planned in advance, you eliminate the uncertainty of being able to get to one in time.

Shopping and parties are also common during this time so scope out your surroundings and know where the rest rooms are. There is nothing worse than having the urge and not knowing where to go,

Incontinence doesn't have to slow down your holiday plans, just do a little common sense planning, stock up on products if you need them and you will fully enjoy the season.

How to Cope With Incontinence at Work

Urinary incontinence can be very unsettling especially at the workplace where you have schedules like staff meetings, client meetings, business lunches on an almost daily basis. Getting up frequently from your work station can be a nightmare especially if you have a boss who is not understanding. However the problem can be taken care of with some strategic planning and the right incontinence armoury.

Here are some tips for you to handle incontinence at the workplace:

1. Good-quality absorbent pads: These are a must. These are slightly different from the normal menstrual pads and they have a powder that turns into a gel when they come into contact with fluid. They can also retain larger volumes of fluid. This is a must when you have to go to a long meeting.

2. Odor preventers: Many incontinence products contain capsules that disintegrate when they come in contact with fluid and they release a pleasant odor. Odor preventer sprays also do the same job.

3. Tampons: If you have stress incontinence then the best thing you can use is a tampon as it applies pressure on the urethra and prevents leaks.

4. Avoid caffeine and excess drinking water: Caffeine is a powerful diuretic and in a meeting coffee is served by the pots. If you drink two or three cups in a short span then the bladder will fill up and you will have leaks when you stand up. Avoid caffeine and also stay clear from drinking excess water. Instead try sips of water to keep your tongue and lips moist.

5. Kegels: These are a woman's best friend especially if she has incontinence. To do Kegels, contract the muscles that you would use to stop the flow of urine. Hold the contraction for three seconds and then relax. Do this eight to 10 times, at least three times a week. Keep doing this even in meetings, no one will know what you are up to!

6. Black skirts or trousers: Black hides almost everything and black colored clothing is absolutely good for meetings! Little stains will not be seen through black colored clothing. If possible keep a spare set of similar clothes.

7. Let the clock dictate terms and not your bladder: Train your bladder by practice. At first take a bathroom break every two hours and then gradually lengthen the interval between bathroom visits and this works perfect.

8. Consider a pessary: Pessaries are ring like constricting bands that clamp down on the urethra. Your doctor can fit you with the correct size.

9. Breathe deeply: Deep breathing is a form of relaxation exercise. Whenever the urge comes take a deep breathe and do not let go till the urge passes off.

10. Bracing: When a bout of laughter or cough starts remember to tighten your pelvic muscles. This helps prevent leaks.

11. Medications: If you have been prescribed a medication (prescription or natural) remember to take it regularly and do not miss doses.

Follow these tips and have an absolutely SUNNY day at work!

Incontinence and Obesity - What's the Connection?

If you are suffering from stress incontinence and you are overweight one of the causes of your condition could very well be the extra pounds that you are lugging around.

Stress incontinence occurs when the muscles in the pelvic floor become stretched or weaken and this damage is common among women who have been through child birth.  These muscles support and protect the bladder and if they are in less than prime condition, the bladder becomes susceptible to outside pressures.  Often times something as simple as a sneeze or laugh or lifting a heavy object can create enough pressure on the bladder to force a leakage.

But what's the connection to excess fat?

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that a study was done of 338 overweight American women (BMI of 25 to 50) all over the age of 30 each of whom experienced leakage at least 10 times per week.  The objective of the study was to determine if there was a link between their obesity and incontinence.

Of the group that lost weight from a combination of diet and exercise, 17 pounds on average, instances of involuntary passing of urine as a result of stress incontinence was cut by nearly 50%.  There was no noticeable reduction in urge or overactive bladder incontinence.

The study concluded that the extra pressure applied to the bladder by the excess poundage had a direct impact on the condition.  So here is another simple natural therapy for a very troublesome and embarrassing condition.  Losing weight isn't the easiest thing to do but now you have additional motivation.

Incontinence doesn't have to alter your lifestyle.  There are many natural approaches to cure it and an abundance of protective products that can manage it in the mean time.  If you have this condition, visit you doctor to learn the best therapy for you individually.

Fecal Incontinence - A Major Cause of IAD

Urinary and fecal incontinence and can be a serious problem for people who are bed ridden or who have limited mobility and are confined to a wheelchair or who suffer from dementia. Both of these conditions can create rashes that can irritate the skin and cause mild discomfort to extremely painful experiences.

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) affects over 40% of people in long term care facilities. Managing this condition requires a plan that will keep the skin clean and dry. There are a variety of products that can be used but the real solution is to determine the underlying conditions that are creating the incontinence in the first place. Determining those causes and then treating them is the best long term defense against IAD.

What causes the rash associated with IAD?

Both forms of incontinence can bring about the conditions that can attack the skin and cause an infection. Urinary incontinence can bring excessive moisture which attacks the ph balance of the skin and leaves it vulnerable for infection. A fecal continence problem brings the skin into contact with harmful bacteria that can compromise the skin's defense system and bring on a painful secondary infection. The longer the skin is exposed to these threats the more likely an infection will occur.

Even cleaning the area can be a problem. If not done promptly, the friction caused by cleaning can upset the ph balance and create a problem. Over a third of patients that are hospitalized will experience this condition and the key is prompt attention by staff and treating the underlying causes. Often there simply isn't enough staff to go around to do this effectively.

How to minimize the risk of IAD

As mentioned, prompt care and treatment of the cause of incontinence are important in reducing the skin's exposure to IAD. However there are a number of products that can be used that can help manage the situation. Incontinence pants, particularly for fecal incontinence can go a long way in the skin being in contact with harmful bacteria. Pads are effective to absorb excess urine and keep the skin dry. Skin barriers, moisturizers and pH specific cleansers are also tools that are available to the care givers.

The use of quality products that can wick away moisture and keep the skin dry and clean is the best way to prevent an infection from occurring. Urinary and fecal incontinence can be a serious health problem for those who are hospitalized or have limited mobility. Care givers should be aware of the options they have available to control this condition.

Living With Incontinence

As always we recommend that you discuss your particular issue with your local doctor so that you are aware of the medical prevention that may be suitable for you.

One thing that you can do is plan for these unplanned and unexpected events. If you are going out for the day you can plan your journey in advance to make sure that a toilet is never too far away. You can use the national pubic toilet map to make sure that you have somewhere nearby to go. Also hotels and shopping centres also have public facilities available so make use of them when you need to.

There are differing types of incontinence with the main two being - Stress Incontinence and Urge Incontinence as outlined below. You should be able to decide which one you have with the symptoms outlined below.

Stress Incontinence

Stress Incontinence as the name suggests occurs when the bladder feels stressed. Common reasons for this would be sneezing or coughing as this increases the amount of pressure placed on the abdominal muscles. This may also occur when exercising or laughing - Basically anything that adds extra pressure to the stomach muscles.

The reason for this is generally due to a weakening in the pelvic floor muscles which occurs during childbirth as the pelvic floor muscles are stretched and weakened. One remedy is to exercise the pelvic floor muscles to regain strength and lessen the frequency of your incontinence or the amount of urine leaked. You may have heard of pelvic floor exercises under the name of kegel exercises.

Urge Incontinence

Urge Incontinence is the state of suddenly needing to go to the bathroom with very little or no warning meaning that you need a bathroom nearby otherwise you may not get there in time and leakage occurs. This condition is also referred to as an over active bladder and stems from having damage to either the bladders nerve system or damage to surrounding and controlling muscles.

It is possible for women to have both Stress and Urge incontinence otherwise known as mixed urinary incontinence.

What Can You Do About Incontinence?

Again seek medical advice. Some other things that you can do depending on your type of incontinence are:

Plan any trips that you are making using the Public Toilets Map as advised at the top of this page

If you know that you have an outing try to restrict or minimise the amount of fluids that you consume within reason - Our bodies do need fluids.

Carry incontinence pads with you in your hand bag or somewhere else convenient so that you have a change if problems occur.

If you have Urge Incontinence take occasional trips to the bathroom just to see if there is anything in your bladder that you can empty

Try to strengthen the muscles with Pelvic Floor Exercises to increase your muscle control

You may also be eligible for the Incontinence Aids Payment scheme which is a government scheme to help with the cost on incontinence aids.

The Difference Between Adult Pull Ups and Adult Briefs

A variety of adult incontinence products have been developed to help people struggling from incontinence deal with their condition. Two such products are the adult pull ups and the adult briefs. Both products help to manage incontinence, but they have different designs and appeal to different types of users.

Wearing Options

These are designed to be pulled on or off like normal underwear. As such, they are easy to manipulate when one has to go to the washroom since there is no need to completely remove it and put it back on as would be the case with adult briefs. These are preferred by people who are on-the-go and are able to change them on their own. This is because these are familiar to them and are thus convenient and easy to use. The pull ups generally do not have tabs and this feature is mainly found on adult briefs. However, there are some brands that have introduced pull ups with side tabs that can be refastened for those who would like that functionality in their protective underwear.

Adult briefs on the other hand are designed with side tabs which facilitate their removal. All that one has to do is to tear away the sides and remove the brief. Most of the tabs found on adult briefs are the type that can be refastened as this allows the brief to be adjusted to fit more securely on the wearer's body. The refastening tabs also allow the wearer to remove the brief so as to go to the bathroom and then put it back on.

Discretion

Pull ups tend to be slimmer and provide a closer fit on the body than adult briefs. As such, the pull ups tend to be more discreet and unnoticeable. This is a major feature that makes many people opt for this product since discretion and maintaining their freedom is very important to them. Adult briefs do also offer a measure of discretion, but they are a bit more bulky than the pull ups.

Adult briefs generally have higher absorbencies than adult pull ups. While the pull ups do cater for all levels of urinary incontinence, from light to heavy, they are strongest at providing protection for those with light or moderate incontinence. Adult briefs are especially preferred by caregivers due to their high absorbency and side tabs, and they use them on patients who suffer from heavy or severe urinary incontinence, as well from fecal incontinence. The side tabs on the briefs make their removal much easier than pull ups especially when the patient is lying down. Adult pull ups are not as effective in handling fecal incontinence.

Ease of Use

A disadvantage of this protective cloth is that their pull-on and pull-off feature means that the user has to completely remove his pants in order to put on another pull up product. With adult briefs, the side tabs ensure that the product can be replaced without the wearer having to remove his pants.

As for adult briefs, one disadvantage is that they are not easy to put on and position correctly, regardless of whether the wearer is putting them on himself or is being assisted to get them on. The briefs have a strip that indicates wetness and which can be used as a guide to help one put it on correctly, but this is still cumbersome. Pull ups, on the other hand, are much easier to fit correctly since one only needs to pull them on and they fit securely in place.

Both adult pull ups and adult briefs have pros and cons. It helps to try out both options in order to find the one that will effectively manage your incontinence problems and can give you back your pride. Do not be embarrassed by incontinence and instead buy supplies that make dealing with this condition easier!
